BRINGING THE GALAXY HOME IN A BOX

"IN THE STUDIO" WITH SMT

Welcome everyone to the spring of 2026 update!

Since 1997 SMT has provided amazing kits, finished miniatures and parts to modelers and collectors and museums worldwide.

Finally something of an update. A long time in coming!!
Since retiring from kit production a few years ago my time and interests had taken me away from the scale model work world that I spent the last 30ish years in.
My summer months are mostly me working at Heritage Park as the Historic Trades Specialist. A role that I never envisioned for my future but that I have wholly embraced.
I have been enjoying that time away from the model industry, just dipping my toes in once in awhile.  The changes for both good and bad or even sad has been interesting to see unfold. Colleagues and mentors have passed on or retired, effect houses and model shops have closed or adapted to the ever changing work landscape.
For myself nothing much in the model world has been accomplished since 2023. What I have finally realized is that was exactly what I needed. That time between the end of project(s) and the start of the next is a great time for self reflection and a little soul beating.

That means in the time passing - the 1:35 scale V tanker (photos at the end of the page) hasn't really progressed. The space had become somewhat overwhelming and filled with stuff just needing a home.
I have been working on a general cleanup to "clear the spirit" as it were and bring myself back to the studio space.
I recently destroyed about 1000 lbs. of RTV molds to help narrow down the focus here in the studio and drive me forward.

The builds will be one of a kinds though, as having had the last couple years to miss (or as it turns out) NOT MISS mass production of a line of resin garage kits, parts molds and models has brought me to understand I can turn to building as a generalist once again! Its a hazard of the industry, it all becomes work.

A renaming of the main page from "In The Shop" to In The Studio will help to show a reflection of change from workshop to a more relaxed inspired space.

As always, I thank everyone for their patronage over the years! I truly enjoyed supplying sought after science fiction models to builders and collectors all around the world. I still get emails from folks looking for one of our amazing kits.

Donor kits

It has been awhile since I featured any of the studio scale donor kits used on subjects. So here is an overview. These are all a part of my kit collection. Only specific to what I need for my projects. Its a great benefit though to be able to walk and browse through a suspected kit or just grab the part and go.
Pictured here in the slideshow is some of the Plastruct inventory. These bits have been a staple in the Industrial model world for over 60 years.

ON THE BENCH ' V ' & SEAVIEW

Below is some photos what is on my bench. The builds should start to happen in summer of 2026 once that start of the season is less demanding of my time.
I will not continue building the 1/72 shuttle. I think I will just turn the 1/72 into a fighter and call it done. The 1/35 tanker and studio scale tanker I still plan to build. They are holding back some creativity in me and I feel the best way forward is just to complete them as intended.
When I need a break from V, I hope to turn my attention to this nose casting from the original 8ft Seaview model. For me the Aurora/Monogram flying sub will be just fine as a companion.
