Scale Model Technologies

Founded in 1997 by Colin Omilusik to fill what I saw as a void in the model industry and as a natural complement to an industrial model shop. Mainstream manufacturers seemed to have stopped listening back then.

I wanted to change that.... and I did. From the successful 1:48 scale line of SW kits with the 28" Falcon model mastered by Alfred Wong to less modeled subjects like the shuttle from the Original Battlestar Galactica series and Space:1999 12" Eagle kit accessories.

Continuing that tradition SMT produced kits with the help of other skilled craftsman and companies like IFactory, Zarkus Models,Titan Find, Erasmus Designs, Solid State and Alberta Industrial Models, Alfred Wong, Big Smile Mannequins and many others.

I balance that past with a change to the future developing projects that I have a personal interest in doing.

Sincerely, Colin Omilusik

SMT history

One of the questions I am always asked after I tell folks what I do is:
How did you start ? and where did you come up with name?

As a kid I always wanted that cool spaceship model. Unfortunately no on ever seemed to be making the model I wanted! So I learned how through great patience and trial and error. As I got older - into my 20's I realized I enjoyed making a design from whatever I could use to build it. This notion led to the crazy idea that if I wanted these models , surely someone else must too!

And so the idea of a model company was born in my head. I started originally calling it CINE-F/X Models, but that name was soon abandoned after discovering a magazine of similar name.

Along the way I met a few others who shared the same ideas and passion. One of these fellows was Peter Lucas, Owner of Alberta Industrial Models. Not only did he let me rent shop space with AIM, but taught me a few things along the way.

I realized early on there were different ways of doing things and technology could help with repetitive tasks. So the name came about from combining what my goals were. Scale Models (mostly science fiction) and the use of technology to produce high quality, affordable kits.

And though it has not been an easy road I have nevertheless enjoyed my time with creating and running SMT !
