GOMBs Trophy TopOctober 09, 2014
UPDATE: I was just informed that the topper (which proved to be a hit) will become a permanent addition to the base.Very cool, I am honored! Well I got a call from a buddy of mine Monday. A change in schedule had occurred and he woudn't be able to finish his sculpt for the GOMBs model trophy for the contest here in Calgary this Saturday. Would I/could I help out? He had a rough idea of what he wanted. The wooden base was already complete, this would just be a temporary topper for the trophy. Here's a link to the group: http://www.calgarygomb.com/ Presented here is my 10 hour build of the top for the trophy . Armed with a quick visit he handed over a sketch of the "spook" character and the basic idea. An F-4 fighter craft silhouette with the spook character front and center. The idea was the spook needed to have Rick Chins number on the front and the motto "JUST BUILD IT". The Richtofen crest on the rear of the cape if possible. This would be mounted on the aircraft silhouette. So after some thinking, I went with a 42cm high and about 18cm wide silhouette of the craft.
The "spook" character itself would need to redrawn in its entirety. First so it would print nicely, second so I could modify and add to it at will. So after a couple of hours of drawing here's what I had arrived at. Each items is its own element (including creases and shadows) and can be resized, colored, moved etc as needed. Shown here with silhouette behind it of the aircraft. With this drawing done, I set about transferring the parts over to the plotter to print and cut the character in 2d from heavy cardstock. Onto the fighter craft silhouette. This was created in 1/4" thick acrylic. Once I drew it out I printed the pattern and taped it down to the acrylic.
I set about cutting this out of the acrylic on the scroll saw. Once that was completed I sanded the edges with finer and finer sandpaper until a smooth consistency was achieved. From there I flame polished the edges to bring a nice clear look to the acrylic.
I added some dimension to the base by frosting the upper side of the base and adding in a photo of the sky underneath the base. The very bottom of the base I covered with felt. The finished top!
The finished trophy 2014!
